Life said..

All of a sudden, life said, “Whoever told you that I give warnings? Here… deal with this situation! And yes, please don’t try to seek help, because the timing is just perfect - you simply have no one around. FYI, I made sure of that. Now don’t look at me like that.. I don’t answer the ‘Is it fair?’ question.”

This is has been my tag line on the gtalk from few days (k I know it’s too big to be a tag line) and it has been inviting a few extreme reactions from my friends too. Some asking ‘What happened? Why such a glum message?’.. some liking it too much that they have COPIED it… copycats!! Some just asking me to remove it… But whatever the reaction of my friends be, the point is that this hit me suddenly & I could not mean it more anytime else in life than I do now. Life has been unfair, imposing & unresponsive to some of the people I know. Losing a parent for e.g. a tragedy each one of us has to go though sometime in life. And most often than not, life chooses the worst possible time to give us this blow. One of my seniors lost a parent recently. He is the lone child of his parents. I have heard that the trauma was so strong for him that he has turned into a walking body, doesn’t say ‘hi’ to his friends, doesn’t show any emotions, just sits there deaf & dumb, goes to office & comes back home. There have been a couple of other things happening & I would refrain from mentioning them because nobody is going to feel good after reading them but the point here is what do you do when life gives you a blow right on your face? How do you deal with it? What is the antidote for life’s blind turns? Support of your friends, pursuing an interest you are passionate about, or charity?

I myself am going through a kind of darkish phase of life these days, but when I look around, there are worse things happening to people. Not that this makes me happy, but this makes me feel connected & helps me feel their pain more than an otherwise happy soul would feel. I think that’s why my ‘glum’ gtalk message. I have also been trying to do a couple of things myself from the last few days to ease things but I really don’t know what works what does not, or if it’s just the time that helps. But I do believe in one thing - power of human mind. I have observed (with myself as well as with others) that we cannot remain in a low mood for long because it is just not sustainable for our system (lest we go mad!). I think human mind has a tendency to get conditioned very quickly, so a part of it is that we get used to the pain & so are able to remain sane.. but then again it is a very subjective matter & varies from person to person & situation to situation…

Well actually, this post is more of a question.. I would leave it like that only… what can be done? When I hear about a tragedy my friend is going through, what do I do? Listen to her? What else? What do I do when I get hit by an unexpected unpleasant surprise? Rely on my support system – friends, family? Or lock myself up in a room only to emerge after some days having lost 4-5 kgs & with dark circles under my eyes? What can one do? Just wait for it to pass & mind to get conditioned. May be?

naa sawal ban ke mila karo

Listened to this great compilation by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Was a tonic for senses before sleeping...

naa sawal ban ke mila karo, naa jawab banke mila karo
meri zindagi mere khwaab hein, mujhe khwaab banke mila karo

aray shyaam ko mere doston, naa azaab ban ke mila karo
mujhe maikade mein milo agar tow sharaab banke mila karo

mujhe ache log bahut mile, mein tow unke karz se bhar gaya
aray ho sake tow kabhi kabhi tow kharaab banke mila karo

abhi sochna hai tow soch lo, abhi chodna hai tow chod do
naye mausamon mein milo mujhe tow gulaab ban ke mila karo

naa tow iss tarah se mila karo, naa tow uss tarah se mila karo
ha huzoor banke mila kao, haan janab banke mila karo

So far away from you...

I have left my previous job & joined a consultancy company in Singapore. It was a fight to get the job and the profile but it turned out all good at the end. Sometimes I surprise myself by my never-let-go stubborn attitude. Anyways, leaving my job was a piece of cake which I was longing to eat, but leaving India, it turned out, was not. I am a thorough desi at heart... so mohtarma thodi dikkat mein padh gayeen singaapur aakar. I never knew I was going to miss the people back there in India so much. The night when I was to travel to Delhi with my family, my mom did a kind of a ritual that she really believes in. She says it drives away all bad spirits & ensures safety of the family. So as directed by mom, the four of us (including her) stood close to each other while she performed the ritual. That moment I thought about the unbreakable bond of family. I am not quite sure if I believe in mom's rituals & the safety net they provide but one thing I know is that family is the biggest gift to us. It is a relationship that never corrodes, never changes colors, never needs refueling. We seek friendships & intimacies outside but forget that we have such a wonderful family too. I don't mean to undermine the importance of friendships & other relationships, but I just feel that if I have a good family that loves me, I have the loveliest thing already... Miss you mom, dad, bro... Love you loads...
The first few days in Singapore you see, I knew I am gonna miss them terribly in the beginning... I almost fought with a friend today on family values & on the topic of staying with them or away for sake of career & he concluded that I was missing my family... well, right he was! But true to my spirit & reason, I was advocating staying away from them for the sake of career (if required) or rather doing a balancing act. My dad always tells me, "Beta, you should always work where your work is valued".. how could I disappoint him :)
